What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It enables organisations such as SBC to publish frequently updated content, and anyone with internet access to be informed when new content is available and download content immediately.
There are many websites that now offer RSS capabilities, including news, music, movies, and of course, church. You do not have to check your favourite sites for updates. It does not involve e-mail and there is no spam. You can subscribe to as many feeds as you like and unsubscribe from a feed at any time.
RSS is commonly associated with the phrases Feed, Web Feed, Channel, Blog and Podcast.
To set up an RSS feed allyou need is an RSS Reader (a.k.a. Feed Reader, Aggregator, or Podcast Catcher). Outlook 2007 has an built-in RSS reader and most modern internet browsers, such as Internet Explorer 7.0, Mozilla Firefox and Safari also have feed capabilities. If you are using an old version of Outlook or your browser does not have RSS capabilities, you can download a free reader. There are some suggestions at the bottom of this page.
Setting up a feed to the SBC sermons
- Open the RSS Reader.
- Explore the icons until you find one that allows you to add a feed.
- Type or paste this feed address - http://www.southportbaptist.org.au/mp3/sbc.rss
- The current list of sermon titles are listed.
- If you wish to download a sermon immediately, simply click the sermon title. SBC sermons are around 3-6Mb in size and take 1-2 minutes to download at a slow broadband speed. When you download a sermon you will be asked whether you want to open it (i.e. listen to it straight away) or save it to a file (i.e. listen to it later).
- Once the sermon is downloaded, plug in your IPOD or MP3 player and copy the file from the folder you just saved it to, to the IPOD or MP3 player.
Updating the feed
The feed should update automatically as new content is added. If it does not, click the Refresh or Reload icon. The RSS Reader displays a summary of the latest sermons available for download. Many mobile phones these days have RSS capabilities. Simply add the feed as described above, and check regularly for updates. If you have an internet phone you can download directly to your phone.
